Paddy Clancy RIP

The death has taken place of Paddy Clancy, Lisnagowan, Drumkeeran.
Paddy, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday,
died peacefully in Our Lady’s Hospital, Manorhamilton,
on Friday, 10
th August.
Paddy was born in Lisnagowan on 4th August 1922,
the 4
th child in 12 in the family of Nora and Pat Clancy.
He attended Shivdillagh National School.
After school he worked on neighbouring farms before getting a job in the saw mills in Enniskillen.
During the 1940’s he worked in Dublin where he learned the craft of block-maker,
a trade in which he set up his own business in 1949.
He was a block-maker at the building of our Lady’s Hospital in Manorhamilton.
Paddy also spent a number of years working in the Arigna mines.
On leaving the mines he worked for the County Council
and in local creameries in Creevelea, Dromahair and Killasnitt.
He also worked hard on the family farm, looking after a small dairy herd,
making hay, cutting turf and timber.
He and his wife Peg, whom he married in 1958, also grew their own vegetables
and kept flocks of chickens, ducks and geese.
The Clancy household was self-sufficient for food and firing.
Paddy and Peg had three daughters, Josie, Tina and Maura and one son, P J.
Paddy was a devoted husband and a caring father
who made sure his family never lacked for anything.

Over the years the Clancy household was noted for the warm welcome
that was extended to all who called.
Paddy loved the company of others and the fuller the house, the better.
He thoroughly enjoyed the singing, the dancing and the story-telling.
He also enjoyed playing cards, especially “Twenty-Five”.
On days of football matches the house was packed
with locals listening to the match on the radio.

Paddy’s faith was an essential part of his life.
He loyally attended Sunday Mass and Sunday evening Devotions.
Every night he led the family, including visitors in the house, in saying the Rosary.

The sudden death of his beloved wife Peg in 2008 came as a shattering blow to Paddy.
Peg meant everything to him and without her he was totally devastated.

Over the next few years he continued to live on in the family home in Lisnagowan,
but in recent months he became a patient in Our Lady’s Hospital, Manorhamilton.
Though quite ill, Paddy continued to greet his visitors with the same warmth
and the same broad smile with which he had greeted visitors throughout his life.

Paddy is survived by his daughters Josie, Maura and Tina, by his son P J
and by his brother Michael in Dublin.

St Brigid’s Church, Creevelea,
was packed to overflowing for the Funeral Mass on Sunday.
The Mass was celebrated by Fr Gerard Alwill PP,
assisted by Fr Hugh McGonagle CC Calry.

Paddy was laid to rest beside his beloved wife Peg in Drumkeeran Cemetery
