Fr Alwill Expresses his Gratitude
to the People of the Parish
Fr Alwill has expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the people of the parish
for
their sympathy and their support on the death of his father,
Michael Alwill, Church
St, Killeshandra.
Fr Gerry thanked all those who called to the house in Killeshandra,
those who attended
the removal and the funeral Mass,
as well as those who sent Mass cards or wreaths.
Michael Alwill died suddenly on Saturday morning, 24th November.
He was 87 years of
age.
Born in 1925, Michael was the son of Phil and Bridget Alwill, Glasstown, Miltown,
Co Cavan.
As a teenager he began working at the Holy Rosary Convent in Killeshandra.
Having spent a number of years in Dublin training as a gardener,
Michael returned
to Killeshandra Convent, where he was head gardener
until the convent closed in 1985.
In January 1950 Michael married Margaret (Peggy) Fitzpatrick, of Putighan, Belturbet,
and
the couple settled in Killeshandra.
They had only one child, their son Gerard,
the
current PP in Drumkeeran.
After the closure of Killeshandra Convent Michael started helping local home gardeners.
At
all times he was only delighted to share his gardening knowledge
with anyone who asked
his advice.
After the death of his wife Peggy in 2003, Michael continued to be active in his
own garden
until the end of 2011, when his mobility became severely limited.
Michael’s funeral Mass took place in St Brigid’s Church, Killeshandra,
on Tuesday,
27th November.
The Mass was celebrated by his son, Fr Gerard, and by a large number of concelebrating
priests,
consisting of diocesan priests and friends of Fr Gerard.
