Patrick Eardley RIP

The death has taken place of Patrick Eardley, Grouse Lodge, Drumkeeran.

Pat died in Sligo General Hospital on Friday evening, 21st December.
He was only 51 years of age.

Pat was born in January 1962, the second child in the family of Michael and Sadie Eardley,
Grouse Lodge, Drumkeeran.
He received his primary education in Drumkeeran NS
and his secondary education in the local vocational school.

But from the earliest of days Pat showed a great interest farming.
Indeed, he would have been regarded by his many friends as being very knowledgeable
about all things farming and, above all, he was regarded as a very fine judge of cattle.

Pat was a quiet and gentle man.
He always enjoyed a quiet chat and a quiet pint.
Above all, he was a man who enjoyed telling a story.
He had his own unique sense of humour, his own quirkey wit.
In the eyes of some, his humour may’ve seemed droll,
but Pat was a man who could be amused by the most ordinary of things.
But, at all times, his was a gentle sense of humour,
a sense of humour that would never cause offense or hurt to anyone.

Over the years Pat worked on the family farm,
he worked for a while helping to fit kitchen units
and, in more recent years, through the RSS,
he helped to look after the grounds of the local churches and cemeteries.
In that sense, his life was quite simple and his life style was simple.
For Pat was never one that sought the limelight.
He was very happy to be in the background of everything.
He enjoyed listening to Irish traditional music.
He enjoyed reading, whether it be the papers or books.

He also had a great interest in sports of all kinds.

Above all, Pat had a great in-depth knowledge of farming, of music, of sport etc.

Pat was the kind of man who never seemed to worry
and who seemed to be quite happy with his station in life.

He lived a simple life, a good life, a good-natured life,
a life filled with many acts of kindness for his neighbours and friends.

In all things, Pat was a man who was very much at ease with life.
Even over the last year or so, since he first became ill,
he maintained that same sense of ease about his illness,
and in more recent times he faced the possibility of his death
with great calm and with great dignity.

Pat is survived by his sisters Maureen and Pauline and by his brothers Eamon and Michael.

The large crowds that attended both the removal on Sunday evening
and the Funeral Mass on Monday
bear eloquent witness to the high esteem in which this quiet man was held
by all in the local community.

Patrick was laid to rest in the family plot in Drumkeeran Cemetery.
