Fell From Church Belfry
And lived to tell the tale!
Pictured here during a recent visit to Drumkeeran is
Mickey Cassidy
who in 1959 survived a fall from the Belfry of
St Brigid’s Church, Drumkeeran.
Then aged 19, Mickey was working near the top of the Belfry
when one of the planks
on the scaffolding gave way.
Mickey fell to the ground.
Miraculously he was still live, though unconscious.
He was rushed to Manorhamilton Hospital
where, three days later, he recovered consciousness.
Despite the severity of the fall,
Mickey suffered no serious injuries.
The then local curate, Fr Jimmy Duffy, attributed Mickey’s miraculous survival
to
the fact that he was wearing his Brown Scapular.
Mickey and his wife, Bridie, live in Meriden, Connecticut,
and are regular visitors
to Drumkeeran.
Mickey is a brother of Tommy Cassidy, Derrinweir.
