Great News for
Creevelea National School

Friday, 8th March brought great news for the pupils, the parents,
the staff and the friends of Creevelea National School.

It was announced at a Board of Management meeting that
the patron of the school, Bishop Leo O’Reilly,
had decided that the school be allowed remain open,
in spite of the fact that it would become a one-teacher school.

Huge uncertainty over the future of the school had been created when,
at the end of last September, it became obvious that,
due to government policy, it was in danger if losing one of its two teachers.

When it became apparent earlier this year that the enrolment for September 2013
would not be high enough to prevent the loss of the second teacher,
many began to fear that the school might have to close.

However, the whole school community continued to work hard to save their school.
They lobbied local politicians, inviting them to visit the school
and asking them to make representations to the Minister.
Bishop Leo O’Reilly visited the school and met with the Board of Management
on two occasions, on 24
th November and again on 1st March.
Following this latter meeting he made the decision to allow the school to remain open
and to operate as a one-teacher school.

The news was greeted with great joy and delight by members of the Board,
by parents and pupils, by staff and by past-pupils and friends of the school.

In October last pupils of Creevelea NS played Irish music for retiring teacher, Chris Mahon.

Furthermore, for the people of Creevelea, who over the years have lost their creamery,
their shops and their post-office, the decision to keep the school open is very important
as the school is is one of the few surviving symbols of community in the area.

The Board of Management expressed it’s deep appreciation and gratitude to Bishop Leo
for allowing the school to remain open.

Chairperson of the Board, Fr Alwill, thanked the members of the Board of Management,
the parents, the teachers and the many local people who worked hard over the last few months
to promote the school and to save it from closure.
