John James Doherty RIP
The death has taken place of John James Doherty, Aras Bhride,
and formerly of Lugmeelton
and Sheena.
John James died in Sligo General Hospital on Monday, 16th September.
Only a few days
earlier he had attended a birthday party
for one of his fellow residents in Aras Bhride
and
had played a few tunes on the tin whistle.
He himself had celebrated his own birthday
in July
when he reached the grand age of 91.
From a young age John James had a great love of Irish music.
He was a fine flute player
and he also played the trumpet with a band
that played in many of the local halls
in Leitrim, Sligo and Roscommon.
John James was a pioneer when it came to the provision of public transport in the
area.
He was one of the earliest people to provide a taxi service.
Over the years he
and his wife Mary expanded that taxi service
into a very successful bus and mini-
The company is now operated by his son Brian and his wife Anne.
John James was a man of courage and determination.
Never was that courage and determination
as obvious
as when he was seriously injured in a traffic accident over 40 years ago.
He
was in danger of being confined to a wheelchair but his courage
and his determination
ensured that he overcame his injuries.
He was a quiet man who enjoyed the games of cards, the Irish music
and the company
of his neighbours and friends.
He was also a good family man and a lifelong member of the Pioneers.
He was a loving
husband to his wife Mary
and a devoted father to their children, Elaine, Ivan and
Brian.
We extend our sympathy to John James’ family
and to his fellow residents in Aras Bhride.
He
will be sadly missed by all.
John James’ funeral took place on Thursday, 19th September.
Fr Maurice McMorrow, PP Ballinaglera, celebrated the funeral Mass,
after which John
James was laid to rest in Drumkeeran Cemetery.
