Frances Campbell RIP
It was with deep shock and sadness that the community of
Treenadullagh and the Black Road learned of the sudden death
of their much loved neighbour, Frances Campbell, on Wednesday, December 4.
Frances was born in Brooklyn, New York, around 1940.
Her parents were Pete and Annie
Campbell.
They had three other children, Sissie, Jackie and Peter.
Frances’ parents returned to Ireland and settled in Drumkeeran.
Then in the early
1970’s Frances gave up her job in the bank
to come to Ireland to look after her mother
Annie, who had become ill.
She continued to care for Annie until she died in 1974.
Frances then returned to New York.
A few years later she returned to Dublin,
where
she worked in the Bank of Nova Scotia.
However, after being injured in a road accident,
she
decided to settle in Treenadullagh.
There she remained for the rest of her life.
She, quickly settled in to her new home
and became a great friend and neighbour to
all those who lived in the locality.
She always gave a great welcome to all who called
to her house.
She loved their company and she loved to chat away with them
about all
that was happening, both locally and internationally.
Frances was a kind and generous lady.
She was always willing to help her neighbours
in whatever way she could.
In particular, she was very kind to the local children
and had a great affection for them.
They never left her house empty-
Throughout her life Frances had to come to terms with various setbacks
but she showed
great courage and great determination in dealing with them.
For example, the injuries
she had sustained in that road accident had severely limited her mobility.
But she
did not allow them to limit her enjoyment of life.
She did her little bit of gardening
around the house
and around her little grotto, dedicated to Our Lady.
She was also read widely read person who kept herself very much abreast of current
affairs,
not only in Ireland, but also in the US and right around the world.
She had
a great interest in genealogy and, in recent times, she was working on the family
tree.
And she also embraced the new technology; computers, email and the internet.
And
in recent years she had to endure yet another setback
as her eyesight began to decline.
Over the years she also had to cope with the loss of members of her own family.
Her
mother Annie died in 1974.
In 1983 she lost her brother Peter.
In 1992 her father Pete
died
and, 10 years ago, her other brother Jackie died.
Frances was a lady of deep faith and, despite her limited mobility,
she made sure
she never missed her Sunday Mass.
She also had deep devotion to Our Lady and to Padre
Pio.
It was that faith, as well as her inner strength,
that gave her the determination
to continue to live life to full,
regardless all the setbacks.
She is survived by her sister Sissie in New York
and by her nieces and nephews
in both
America and Ireland.
After Mass of the Resurrection in Drumkeeran
Frances was laid to rest in the family
plot
in Killargue Cemetery
on Monday, December 9.
