Maura McNiff RIP
The death has taken place of Maura McNiff, Drumduffy.
Maura, who was 88 years old,
died peacefully in Our Lady’s Hospital, Manorhamilton,
on
Sunday, July 28.
Maura was born on 14th February 1925,
the only daughter of Francis and Catherine Murphy,
Lugnaskeeghan.
She had two brothers, Micheál and Frank.
Maura went to London where she trained as a nurse.
She specialised in psychiatric
nursing and was promoted
to the position of Matron in the hospital where she worked.
In 1970’s she returned to Lugnaskeeghan to look after her mother.
She married Eamonn McNiff and settled in Drumduffy.
Maura McNiff was a lady who enjoyed life to the full.
She enjoyed living in the
country.
She enjoyed dressing up and going out for a meal.
She enjoyed her Country
& Western music.
And, as many of the locals will remember,
she enjoyed putting on her
helmet and travelling around the country on her scooter
and later on her Honda 50.
And Maura also enjoyed entertaining visitors in her home.
She was a dab hand at making
a good cocktail,
with the little umbrella on the top.
Above all, Maura was a great neighbour and a true friend.
She was always happy to listen to people and to offer them her advice.
And they, on the other hand, knew that they could trust that not a single word
they
told her would be revealed to another soul.
Maura was also a woman of deep faith.
Her Sunday Mass and her Rosary played a central
role in her life.
Every room of her house was adorned with religious statues and pictures.
This
deep faith helped her cope the the difficult moments of her life,
especially with
the death of her husband Eamonn in 1988.
Maura never complained and she adopted a
strong
‘you just have to get on with it’ approach to life.
Over the last few years Maura experienced much ill health.
A few weeks ago she was
admitted to hospital
having suffered a stroke.
She never really recovered from that.
She died peacefully on Sunday, July 28.
The Funeral Mass was celebrated in St Brigid’s Church, Creevelea,
on Tuesday, July
30.
Maura was laid to rest beside her husband Eamonn in the family plot
in Killargue Cemetery.
