Closure of Creevelea NS

- The End of an Era -

Wednesday, 24 June, was a  sad day for the people of Creevelea

as they saw their local national school

close its doors for the last time.

Over the last few years,
despite an energetic campaign to increase pupil numbers in the school,
the enrolment had fallen below the number required to
retain a second teacher.

St Brigid’s NS had become a one-teacher school,
with only 10 pupils in attendance.

On Wednesday the pupils and their parents,
past-pupils and friends of the school gathered
to mark the school’s final day.

Among those attending was May Gallagher,
one of the oldest past pupils of the school.

A number of presentations were made.

On behalf of the Board of Management Tommy Drugan and Geraldine Gallagher
make a presentation to Mary Dolan, the school Principal.

Pupils and Parents also made a presentation to Mrs Dolan

Sixth class pupils made a presentation to Tommy O’Rourke,
their bus driver.

Presentations were also made to Annie McMorrow by Pupils & Parents
and by the Board of management.
Annie has been the cleaner in the school for over 30 years.

Tommy Drugan, on behalf of the Board of Management,
made a presentation to Paul Gallagher, caretaker.

A special Mass of Thanksgiving
was celebrated in St Brigid’s Church, Creevelea,
on Monday, 22 June.

Many former members of staff attended the Mass,
including Rena Fallon,
Principal of the school for 26 years.

A number of priests who had served in the Creevelea area also attended the Mass,
including Fr Oliver Kelly, Fr Donal Kilduff and Fr John Sexton.

Among the items brought to the altar in the Offertory Procession
were the oldest Roll Book and the most recent Roll Book.

Some of those who attended the Mass, including pupils, parents and past-pupils,
teachers and former teachers, clergy and many friends of Creevelea School.

Those attending the Mass,
were invited to partake
of light refreshments in the school.

We thank Liam Malaniff
for the photographs taken at the Mass.

Liam also took photographs at the function in the school
