Michael Guihan RIP

The death has taken place of

Michael Guihan

Cartron Beg, Drumkeeran.

Michael, better known to his neighbours and friends as Mickey Curley,
died in Our Lady’s Hospital, Manorhamilton,
on Thursday, 9 April.

Mickey was born on 13th August 1930,

the youngest of the seven children born to James and Bridget Guihan of Cartron Beg.

He attended the nearby Cartron School and then started working in the mines at the age of 14.
In all, he spent 40 years in the mines.
Not only was Mickey a hard worker but he was also a very decent man
who always looked after and cared for the younger miners,
especially those who were just starting to work in the mines.
For a number of years he was a worker’s representative
and he was a fearless spokesperson for his workmates.

Mickey was the kind of man for whom looking after others was an important aspect of life.
He looked after and cared for his elderly father and mother,

both of whom were well into their 80’s when they died.
Mickey was also a great neighbour, a man who was always willing
to help his neighbours and friends whenever he could.

On a few occasions Mickey travelled to New York to visit his brother and sisters there.
At one time he considered staying in the US,
but home had a very special place in his heart.

Following ill-health in 1985 Mickey decided to quit the mines.
He continued doing his bit of farming.
He kept the couple of cattle and he made the hay.

Indeed, he was also quite a keen and skilful gardener,

growing his own cabbage, potatoes etc.

Mickey was even more skilful when it came to the cards,
especially the game of
Twenty-Five.
He really enjoyed the Saturday night games of
Twenty-Five.

One Christmas recently he won seven turkeys in card games.
He certainly enjoyed the cards.
And he enjoyed the company.
And, of course, he enjoyed the few drinks with his friends.
He was an easy going and pleasant man
who was always willing to have a chat.

Because of that open friendliness
he was one of the best liked
and most popular members of the local community.

In more recent times Mickey’s health took a turn for the worse
and he was admitted to Our Lady’s Hospital in Manorhamilton.

It was there that he died
on Thursday, 9 April.

The huge crowds that called to his reposing at the house
and the very large attendance at the Funeral Mass
bore eloquent testimony of the high regard in which he was held
both in the Tarmon, Drumkeeran and Arigna communities.

He is survived by his many nephews and nieces.

Mickey’s Funeral Mass took place

on Sunday, 12 April.

After the Mass he was laid to rest in the family plot
in Curraghs Cemetery.
