Francis O’Brien RIP
The death has taken place of
Francis (Francie) O’Brien,
Falty.
Francis died suddenly at his home
on Tuesday, 27 January.
Francis Patrick O’Brien was born on 31 March, 1949,
the oldest of the four children born to Packie and Katie O’Brien.
After attending school in Tarmon, Francie started working in the Arigna mines.
In
all, he worked there for about 30 years,
until the mines closed in 1990.
During his time in the mines Francis proved to be a very hard worker.
A very determined man,
he let no injury or no pain stop him from doing his work.
Francie also worked hard at home on the farm.
He had a great love for farming
and he
was a great judge of cattle and horses.
Not only was he a hard worker but he was also
very knowledgeable
when it came to cattle and to horses
and the various ailments that
could strike them.
Many of his neighbours regarded him as somethiing of an unofficial
vet.
He was always willing to help them if they had ailing animals.
Francie was a great neighbour, always ready to help out when needed.
Since his death many of his neighbours recalled
their stories of times that he helped them and their families.
They recalled how Francie’s help was always whole-
And members of the family also recalled his goodness to their children,
his nieces
and nephews.
All that hard work began to take its toll on him over the last few years.
Health problems
meant that, in recent times,
he spend many lengthy periods in hospital,
both in Sligo
and in Cappagh.
Francie died suddenly in his house
on Tuesday, 27 January.
He is survived by his sisters Mary and Teresa
and by his brother Gabriel.
Very large crowds attended his removal and funeral.
The funeral Mass took place in St Patrick’s Church, Tarmon,
on Saturday, 31 January.
After the Mass, Francis was laid to rest in Curraghs Cemetery.
