Creevelea is well represented in the new 2014 edition of the Leitrim Guardian,
the 144 page journal that reports on life in County Leitrim.
Pat Phildy playing the tin whistle in Gaeglom
This year’s edition contains an article by veteran New York journalist, Jack Deacy.
The
article is entitled "Travels With Pat Phildy".
In this article Jack remembers his late uncle Pat Phildy McGowan,
a farmer, musician
and maker of songs and recitations
that won him the name "The Bard of Creevelea".
Seamus Horan and Pat Phildy share a joke in the local shop/post office in Creevelea
The article has several photos of Phildy and other Creevelea locals
taken by the renowned
photojournalist Jill Freedman
who was a regular visitor to Creevela in the 1970’s.
Also mentioned in the article are a number of local people who died in recent times;
James
Doherty, Mae McGee and John Gallagher.
Jack Deacy still visits Creevelea in the springtime every year
staying in the Feeney
cottage in townland of Tullintowel.
Another Creevelea connection is that Blaithín Gallagher,
who lives in Altavra, is
the editor of the 2014 Guardian.
Her husband, the artist Johnnie Lawson,
designed the
2014 Guardian cover,
a beautiful winter snow scene of the
Creevelea area.
We thank Jack Deacy for providing this report.
