Church of Ireland Parish Church
On Sunday, 6th May, members of the local Church of Ireland community held their first service in Drumkeeran Parish Church in over 30 months.
The service was led by Canon Billy Johnston.
The church, which was built in 1828, had become very run down in recent years.
Over the last few years it has undergone major conservation and renovation works.
The project included work on the roof, on the external stonework, on the windows
and on the internal wall surfaces.
Parishioners had to attend service in neighbouring parishes.
While most of the basic work is nearly finished,
the final work of painting the church has yet to be completed.
As part of the renovation work,
three old plaques were restored to their place on the walls of the church.
One of the plaques is in memory of Rev William Wilkins,
a minister in the parishes of Killinagh and Killargue,
who died on 13th February 1868.
A second plaque is in memory of Capt Thomas Studdert,
who did 20 years of military service in India.
He died from typhus fever while visiting Belhavel on 28th October 1855.
The third plaque is in memory of two 18-year old boys
who were drowned while on a canoeing expedition on Lough Allen on 8th July, 1879.
They were Kenneth Reed from London and William J Anderson.
